LANSING – State Representative Gary McDowell (D-Rudyard) today announced that Petoskey will receive a federal grant to construct 1.6 miles of a nonmotorized trail along the resort bluffs from East Park (Quarry Drive) to Magnus Park (West Lake Street) – a critical link in a regional trail system with breathtaking views of Little Traverse Bay.
"Expanding this trail along the resort bluffs strengthens our tourism industry," McDowell said. "The more recreational opportunities we have, the more attractive we are to visitors – which pumps more tourism dollars into our local economy."
This particular segment is a critical link in a regional trail system with incredible views of Little Traverse Bay. The project budget is $1,310,345 – which breaks down to $1,022,069 in federal transportation enhancement funding, administered through the Michigan Department of Transportation, and $288,376 in matching funds from the city of Petoskey.
"We all know what a great area this is to live, work and raise a family," McDowell said. "By enhancing our quality of life, even more families and employers considering where to locate will realize what our community has to offer."
McDowell reminded local governments that they have until March 1 to apply for another grant program designed to help communities enhance their outdoor recreational opportunities and facilities. Up to $1 million a year is available through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is administered by the National Park Service and managed in Michigan by the Department of Natural Resources. Grant application materials can be found at the DNR Web site, www.michigan.gov/dnr-grants, or by calling (517) 373-9125.
