I was really impressed with the Governor's call for us to put our partisan labels aside. We're not here as Democrats or Republicans we're here to work for the people of Michigan. That's what we need to be doing. I'm very, very upbeat, I'm excited, working on the new initiatives; alternative fuels, there's such potential for Northern Michigan, huge potential in Northern Michigan with our wood, our water, our wind and our grasses up there. And also the tourism promotion, $50 million dollars for tourism promotion will put us number 2 in the country and we'll be able to tell our story, all that we have in Northern Michigan to offer and we'll have an international campaign to promote Northern Michigan. So this is really exciting, really good news for our economy.

Recently, I have introduced a plan that allows individuals to deduct up to 50 percent of what they spend on making their homes energy efficient. This includes installing a more energy efficient furnace, resealing or installing new windows, or installing a computerized thermostat. Those families earning up to 300 percent of the poverty level, or $58,050 in 2005 for a family of four, are eligible for this deduction when making these energy efficient changes. Up to $5,000 can be deducted per year. We must give real assistance to our struggling families dealing with skyrocketing heating costs and this plan does just that. The deduction would be assessed when Michigan is in the midst of a home-heating emergency and this plan will bring much-needed relief this winter and in winters to come.

Sen. Wayne Kuipers recently scheduled hearings throughout the state to gather input from parents, teachers, school leaders, job providers and others concerning the increased state high school graduation requirements. However, Midland is the farthest location north for a hearing. The people who live north of Midland deserve the same respect, support and opportunities to express their opinions as citizens that live in the rest of our state. Schools in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula have unique problems including declining enrollment, transportation costs and heating costs. To be totally ignored is a gross insult to our teachers, schoolchildren, parents, and citizens that live in northern Michigan and the U.P. I urge Sen. Kuipers to reconsider the hearing schedule and include the northern portion of our state in this important discussion.

Michigan needs good-paying jobs, not landfills. I have worked to stem the flow of imported trash for a year now and each day we delay puts our land and our communities at risk. Unfortunately, the Legislature ended the year without giving Michigan families any relief from the growing problem of imported trash. By allowing the landfill ban to expire, my colleagues are saying it's OK for Michigan to be the nation's dumping ground. The landfill in Dafter, for example, could be allowed to expand in 2006. The Upper Peninsula is drowning in trash from Canada and Wisconsin. We must pass anti-trash legislation now.

Once again, the snow is about to fall and families from across the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan are preparing to embrace all the winter sports our beautiful state offers: ice fishing; downhill and cross-country skiing; ice skating; ice hockey; and, of course, snowmobiling. Michigan is renowned for its snowmobiling. With more than 6,100 miles of trails, there are few places a snowmobile won't let you explore! That's why in 2004, SnowGoer Magazine voted Michigan's Upper Peninsula No. 1 in four categories: best overall snowmobiling area; most scenic snowmobiling area; best trail riding; and best powder riding. For a variety of snowmobiling-related topics, including safety course dates and times, required equipment and registration information you can go the Michigan Snowmobile Association website at www.M-S-A-snow.org or call 1(800) 246-0260. I wish you all a safe and happy snowmobile season

Michigan families deserve relief from the harsh cold of winter and financial hardships, and that’s what this legislation does. With home heating costs expected to rise dramatically, many families will be struggling to ensure their homes are safe and warm for their children or their parents. Michigan is facing an emergency situation when winter hits. This legislation ensures that we are prepared to help our families cope with big heating bills.
