Michigan needs good-paying jobs, not landfills. I have worked to stem the flow of imported trash for a year now and each day we delay puts our land and our communities at risk. Unfortunately, the Legislature ended the year without giving Michigan families any relief from the growing problem of imported trash. By allowing the landfill ban to expire, my colleagues are saying it's OK for Michigan to be the nation's dumping ground. The landfill in Dafter, for example, could be allowed to expand in 2006. The Upper Peninsula is drowning in trash from Canada and Wisconsin. We must pass anti-trash legislation now.
